The Leonardtown Bookends: July 3 and July 5
Leonardtown is holding both ends of the corridor. It clears Saturday for something different, and this year that something is Music Under the Oaks in Leonardtown on July 5, staged at Tudor Hall.

The other 250th touchpoint in Drayden is the Drayden African American Schoolhouse at 18287 Cherryfield Road, which holds free public open houses. That building carries a specific and important history for St. Mary's County, and the schoolhouse open house is worth pairing with the marina celebration on the same trip. Bring cash for the marina, plan on shoreside sun exposure, and treat the drive home in the dark as part of the itinerary rather than a nuisance.
The Reopening Nobody Should Miss: Maryland Dove, July 7
Two days after the last Leonardtown fireworks, Historic St. Mary's City resets its main attraction. The maritime exhibit Maryland Dove, currently closed to the public, reopens on Tuesday, July 7, 2026. If you have out-of-town family coming through the weekend and staying into midweek, the Tuesday reopening is the itinerary. This is also the moment to remember that the outdoor living history exhibits will be closed on Friday, July 3, 2026, due to the expected heat index, so do not try to layer Historic St. Mary's City into Freedom Fest day. Two Tuesdays later, the same site runs MarylandFest, which replaces the former Beerfest with a bigger event celebrating Maryland spring outdoors at Historic St. Mary's City, located at 18751 Hogaboom Lane in St. Mary's City. The renaming is worth noting because the old Beerfest crowd will show up expecting the old format, and this year is not that.
The College's Standing Contribution
Threaded through all of this is the River Concert Series at St. Mary's College Townhouse Green, 47645 College Drive in St. Mary's City. National Lighthouse Weekend runs at Piney Point Lighthouse Museum on August 8 and 9, from 10am to 5pm both days, in an open house format with free access to the lighthouse and grounds on the Potomac River. It is one of those hidden-gem events that is easy to miss if you don't know about it.
The reason to flag this now rather than in early August is planning capacity. If July feels overprogrammed with the 250th sequence, August 8-9 is the free-and-easy counterpoint. No tickets, no timed entry, no fireworks logistics. Just the light on the Potomac and a piece of the county's maritime history you can walk through with kids in about an hour.
